Name of God’s Son

2 Corinthians 2:12 – ‘in the Lord’ or ‘by the Lord’?

The apostle writes (in most Bibles):

‘a door was opened for me in the Lord

The Greek word used for ‘in’ is εν, which can be translated as ‘in’. However, it can also mean ‘by’ as in ‘by means of’. The same dual use applies to the equivalent Aramaic word.

So, based on the context, a simpler and more down-to-earth translation is:

‘a door was opened for me by the Lord

Or, since this verse seems to be using Lord as a euphemism for God’s Name (see the link in the text for details), our translation says:

'[Jehovah] had opened a door [of opportunity] for me there.’
