About
This book, 1 Enoch (sometimes called The Book of Enoch, or just Enoch) is an ancient Jewish apocalyptic text. Tradition ascribes it to Enoch, Noah's great-grandfather (mentioned in Genesis 5:18-24).
The Book has not survived intact in Greek, so it's pieced together from various sources:
Most of the text comes from 6th century AD Codex Panopolitanus (Cairo Papyrus 10759; also known as the Codex Gizeh, or the Akhmim fragments, named after the place it was found in Egypt).
The brief extract of chapter 89:42-49 is from the 4th century AD Codex Vaticanus.
Next, 97:6-107:3 comes from the 4th century AD papyri in the Chester Beatty Papyrus (P. XII).
Some small parts are from the 8th century AD work Chronographia Universalis by Byzantine historian George Syngellos.
