About
The authorship of the Didache, an early Christian manual on church practice and ethics, remains uncertain. Traditionally attributed to the Twelve Apostles, this attribution is widely regarded as symbolic rather than literal.
Some scholars suggest it may have originated from a community of Jewish Christians, given its emphasis on Jewish practices and its early date (late 1st to early 2nd century AD). The text itself does not name an author, and its composite nature—combining liturgical, moral, and disciplinary instructions—points to multiple contributors rather than a single individual.
Additionally, evidence suggests that the Didache may have been expanded or edited in later centuries, as certain sections reflect developments in church organization and practice that align with the 3rd or 4th century. This layered composition has led to ongoing debate about its true origins and evolution.
