Zechariah 12:10 - Mocked or Pierced?
The Hebrew text of Zechariah 12:10 uses the word meaning ‘pierced’ (דָּקַר, daqar), while the Greek Septuagint uses a word that literally means to ‘dance in triumph over a defeated enemy’ (ἐξορχήσομαι, exorcheō), implying ‘mocked’.
Why the difference?
It seems the Greek translator didn’t understand the prophecy, and took the expression ‘pierced’ to mean an emotional jabbing, or mocking! The translator obviously had no way of knowing that he was mangling a prophecy about the Messiah!
The New Testament quote specifically uses ‘pierced’, confirming that the Greek translator was wrong.
