2 Peter 3:13 – New or Fresh?

Our translation of 2 Peter 3:13, from the Codex Sinaiticus, reads:

‘But we’re also awaiting fresh skies and [an] empty land, according to His promises, in which righteousness dwells!’

Usually Bibles say ‘new’ here instead of our choice of ‘fresh’. We choose ‘fresh’ because the Greek word 'καινός' has a wide range of meaning. Yes, it can mean new, as in, the opposite of old; but it can also mean something unused, novel, or even something that’s fresh and untouched or undamaged. It’s not just about how old something is.

So we use ‘fresh’ to bring this to your attention. You could choose to read ‘new’ if you wish. In the context, ‘new’ works just as well.
