Death or Plague?

There is an idiom in Greek where ‘death’ (θανατος, thanatos) is a general term for plague or disease. You just have to infer it from the context.

We know this because the Hebrew word for ‘plague’ is translated as ‘death’ in the Septuagint, such as at Jeremiah 14:12.

However, in texts that were written in Greek, where does it really mean ‘plague’ and where does it just mean ‘death’? Well, it’s not always clear, so we have to make an educated guess from the context. Consulting the Aramaic text isn’t any help, because the same idiom is present in that language too; this can be seen in the Aramaic targums where they too translate the Hebrew word for ‘plague’ merely as ‘death’.
